For breathtaking scenery nothing can beat the dramatic mountains, glens and rivers of Glencoe. Little wonder it was used for so many film backdrops.
The third Harry Potter film, “The Prisoner of Azkaban” took place on location of Glencoe in May and June 2003. During the spring of 2003, three sets were built near to the bottom of Clachaig Gully. The sets were located so as to take in the fantastic scenery, overlooking the Torren Lochan, and the Signal Rock forest to the rugged hills of the glen. Filming continued for a period of several weeks and most of the stars were seen on set at some time or other during the course of the filming. Hagrid’s Hut, complete with pumpkin patch and smoking chimney, the sundial and the turreted gatehouse, and the Bridge to Nowhere sat neatly on the hillside above Clachaig. The sets have now been removed and the hillsides returned to their natural state, leaving behind little evidence of the excitement that descended upon this quiet corner of the glen for a few weeks.
Of course, location filming is not new to Glencoe. “Highlander” was also filmed nearby with the majestic Eilean Donan Castle as it’s backdrop. “Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail” as well as “Rob Roy” and the James Bond film “Skyfall” were also filmed here.
Or how about getting a real bird’s eye view at the top of Scotland’s largest Mountain on the Gondolas at the Glen Nevis Range? Have a hot chocolate at the top in the cafe and either ski back down the mountain, or enjoy a leisurely descent taking in the scenery!
If you don’t want to venture too far off the beaten track then head up to the Cairngorm Mountain Range at Aviemore. Go to the and feed the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre and feed the reindeer by hand in their natural habitat on the hills, it is Britain’s only free ranging reindeer herd! Feel as though you are on top of the world by taking the Cairngorm Funicular Railway up the mountains, it is the highest train in the UK! Take your mountain bike up in the train and cycle back down on the specialised mountain bike trail. There are some great cycle tracks all over Aviemore, super for families or more challenging for cycling pros! Cook sausages and marshmallows on Loch Morlich beach campsite.
